Libertyville, Illinois
General Information
Libertyville is located in central Lake County, about 35 miles north
of Chicago and 61 miles south of Milwaukee. This affluent, rapidly
developing area offers a blend of big city excitement and small
town comfort.
Lake County is home to a number of the nation's
prominent corporations including Motorola, Medline Industries, Hollister,
Inc., Abbott Laboratories, Baxter Healthcare Corporation and Outboard
Marine. There are also numerous mid size firms and small businesses
within the area. In addition to many business centers, there is
a splendid regional shopping mall and numerous retail centers which
draw customers for many miles around.
Libertyville's current population is 19,757.
The downtown area, known as Main Street, has a pleasant array of
specialty stores, restaurants and medical offices. It has been going
through renovation in recent years. Neighboring towns include Gurnee,
Grayslake, Mundelein, Vernon Hills, Lake Bluff and Lake Forest with
populations ranging from 5,487 to 21,215.
Recreation
The Libertyville Park Department has 513 acres divided into seven
parks, with three lakes and facilities for sporting activities.
The Adler Memorial Park in Libertyville has a swimming pool, a youth
fitness course, an 18-hole frisbee golf course, running trails,
ball fields, volleyball and tennis courts and shaded picnic areas.
Programs for adults and children include art and music workshops
and exhibits, organized sports programs, theater classes, specialized
summer day camps, discussion groups and an annual outdoor Festival
of the Arts. For those seeking broader horizons, the major league
sports, entertainment centers, museums, theaters, art galleries
and zoos of both Chicago and Milwaukee are within easy traveling
distance.
Housing
Housing in Libertyville includes older brick
homes in the settled historical part of town to new homes in the
country estates and newly developed subdivisions near village limits.
Homes ranged in price from $50,000 to $850,000 in 1996. The town
has some 1,100 multifamily units, including condominiums and townhouses.
These range in price from $80,000 to $250,000. A one bedroom apartment
rents from between $500 and $655, and a two bedroom unit rents from
between $555 and $830.
Schools
Many people are drawn to the area by the
excellent reputation of local elementary and high school districts,
which enjoy national acclaim for their commitment to quality education.
In addition to the well rounded curriculum, the Libertyville School
District participates in a variety of special programs, such as
special needs and accelerated programs, and provides English as
a second language classes. The district also offers a fine curriculum
for its hearing impaired students.
