Week Three - Joy

Joy in the Midst of Pruning

This Advent season, as we light the candle of Joy, we encounter a paradoxical message in the Gospel of Luke. John the Baptist, a figure known for his austere lifestyle, preaches a message of repentance and judgment. He warns of an impending wrath, comparing people to fruitless trees and chaff.

At first glance, this message might seem harsh and joyless. However, a deeper look reveals a hopeful message of transformation. John's call to repentance is not about condemnation but rather about pruning. Just as a gardener prunes a tree to encourage healthier growth, God prunes us to bear more abundant spiritual fruit.

We often resist pruning, fearing that it will diminish us. But the truth is, pruning is essential for growth. By letting go of the things that hinder our spiritual development – fear, anxiety, and hatred – we create space for hope, peace, and joy to flourish.

Joy is not something we can pursue or force; it is a gift that comes unexpectedly. It often arises in the midst of suffering and challenges, reminding us of God's love and grace.

As we continue our Advent journey, let us embrace the paradox of joy and suffering. May we find joy in the midst of our struggles, knowing that God is working to prune us for a greater purpose. Let us share our blessings with others, trusting that God will provide for our needs. And let us rejoice in the hope of Christ's coming, a hope that brings joy to the world.

Joy to the world,

Pastor Chris
