Week Two - Peace

As we light the candle of peace this second week of Advent, we turn our hearts to a world longing for harmony. The Gospel of John speaks of "Light that Shines in the Darkness," a powerful reminder that peace can emerge even in the darkest of times.

Peace isn't merely the absence of conflict; it's the active cultivation of kindness, compassion, and understanding. It's about treating ourselves, others, and the world with care. It's the intentional pursuit of well-being for all beings and all creation.

The Christmas Truce of 1914 offers a poignant example of this kind of peace. Amidst the horrors of World War I, soldiers from opposing sides emerged from their trenches to share a moment of humanity. They sang carols, exchanged gifts, and played soccer. For a brief, fragile moment, the battlefield became a space of peace, a testament to the power of human connection.

Like the soldiers on that fateful Christmas Day, we have the power to reimagine our world. Instead of focusing on division and conflict, we can choose to see it as a place of shared humanity and interconnectedness. We can prioritize dialogue, empathy, and the pursuit of a better future for all.

The angel’s message to the shepherds, "Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people," echoes this vision of a peaceful world. It is God’s invitation to all to embrace peace, to spread kindness, and to work towards a future filled with hope and harmony.

Peace to all,

Pastor Chris
